New Delhi: India has rejected the actions of the newly formed Pakistan-China Joint Border Commission, reiterating that the arrangement has no legal validity from India’s perspective. The Ministry of External Affairs said India’s position on the matter was clear and consistent and maintained that there was no recognised border between Pakistan and China in the context of the Indian territories concerned.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India completely rejects the joint commission, which, according to the ministry, has no legal basis. He also reiterated India’s position that it has never accepted the 1963 China-Pakistan Border Agreement and considers the agreement illegal. The Indian government has previously maintained this position in official communications concerning the agreement.

Jaiswal said India strongly opposes any attempt to alter the existing status of territories that India describes as being under illegal occupation or to give legitimacy to such occupation. He also stated that any border cooperation between China and Pakistan concerning Indian territories would be unacceptable to India and would not affect its sovereignty over those areas.

India further reiterated that the entire territory comprising Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is an integral part of the country and will continue to remain so. The Ministry of External Affairs said Pakistan has no legal right, according to India’s position, to enter into agreements concerning Indian territories that it has allegedly occupied illegally and by force.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced through a post on the ‘X’ platform that the Pakistan-China Joint Border Commission had begun functioning and that the two countries had held their first meeting. Pakistan said the commission would facilitate improvements in border management, joint border surveys, trade and people-to-people contacts, describing it as a significant milestone in relations between the two countries.

The 1963 China-Pakistan agreement itself provided for a joint boundary demarcation commission to conduct surveys, establish boundary markers and prepare detailed maps. It also stated that negotiations concerning the boundary would be reopened after a settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
