**Thiruvananthapuram: **Police have registered a case over an alleged false social media campaign targeting Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala in connection with his visit to the United States. The FIR was registered by the Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Police.

According to the police case, CPM leader K.S. Arun Kumar has been named as the first accused, while the social media profile ‘Porali Shaji’ has been named as the second accused. Two other social media profiles have also been included as accused in the case.

The case relates to social media posts concerning Ramesh Chennithala’s trip to the United States. The police position, as reflected in the case, is that false allegations were circulated through Facebook and other social media platforms with an alleged attempt to defame him.

The social media campaign reportedly claimed that around Rs 4 crore had been spent from the government treasury for the family trip. The posts alleged that Rs 8 lakh was paid for each flight ticket for the journey.

The police have registered the case by including, among other material, a Facebook post allegedly made by K.S. Arun Kumar. The allegations concerning the travel expenses are part of the content being examined in the case and are not established facts.

Ramesh Chennithala had earlier clarified that the expenses for his trip were not paid from the government treasury. The police case now concerns the alleged circulation of the claims through social media in connection with his US visit.
