**Dammam:** After a period of grief and uncertainty, Preethi returned home with her son George alongside the body of her husband, Martin, who died in Al Ahsa in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Martin, 55, was Kunjumon Zacharia of Thathampally, Alappuzha. His wife Preethi and son George travelled back to their hometown with his body.

Martin had been an expatriate in Al Ahsa for 32 years and died following a heart attack. The family was facing severe financial difficulties, including issues related to the expiry of Martin’s iqama. In view of the circumstances, social, cultural and political organisations in Al Ahsa came together to form the ‘Martin Family Help Committee’ to support the family, bring Martin’s body home and facilitate the return of his wife and children.

Nasser Madani, Faisal Vachakkal, Zulfi Kundamangalam, Sushilkumar and Chandrababu served as patrons of the committee. Haneefa Muvattupuzha was the convener, Shijomon the joint convener, Sujith Kumar the treasurer and Anoop Paul the joint treasurer.

The collective managed to raise 50,590 Saudi Riyals within three days to support the family. The expenses for bringing Martin’s body to India were fully borne by the Indian Embassy.

A total of 20,920 Saudi Riyals, which was pending under the dependent levy for Martin’s son at the Al Ahsa expatriate affairs office, was paid before the family was able to obtain the final exit. The legal procedures were completed under the leadership of Navaodaya Central Committee president Haneefa Muvattupuzha.

Martin’s body was taken to the family residence in Alappuzha. On the previous night, committee office-bearers visited the family and explained the income and expenditure accounts. After meeting the travel expenses, the entire remaining amount was handed over to the family.
