Belagavi: A former soldier and his daughter were allegedly hacked to death by relatives following a property dispute in Kittur in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. The deceased have been identified as 67-year-old Rudrappa Kundaragi, a former soldier residing in Dharwad, and his 30-year-old daughter Shashikala. The two were attacked in front of the Avaradi Gram Panchayat office.

According to the position of the police, Rudrappa had reached the panchayat office to have the ownership of a house entered into the records based on a court order. However, he had reportedly been involved in a long-standing dispute with his brothers over the division of agricultural land.

Police suspect that Rudrappa was attacked by his brothers, Sangappa and Basappa, along with Basappa’s son Madiwallappa, when he came out of the office building. The suspects allegedly attacked him with deadly weapons. Shashikala, an engineer, reportedly tried to protect her father but was also attacked by the accused.

According to the information available, both Rudrappa and Shashikala suffered severe injuries and died at the scene after losing blood. Rudrappa’s driver was also injured in the attack. Eyewitnesses told the police that the suspects fled the scene on motorcycles after the attack.

Belagavi District Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan and other officials visited the scene and led the investigation. SP Ramarajan said police had obtained footage of the attack recorded by local residents and that the visuals would help in identifying the suspects.

The SP also warned that strict criminal action would be taken against anyone who provides shelter or assistance to the suspects. A special team has been formed to trace and apprehend them.

Ramarajan further said that prolonged civil disputes and a lack of awareness about legal remedies can lead to such violence. He added that faster judgments by courts in civil cases could help reduce such crimes.
