What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing is a medical procedure in which eggs are retrieved, frozen and stored for possible pregnancy at a later stage. According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, egg freezing can be useful for people who are not currently ready to become pregnant and for those whose reproductive capacity may be affected by treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.

The first stage involves daily hormone injections for 10 to 12 days to help the ovaries produce multiple mature eggs. Blood tests and ultrasound scans are then carried out three to six times to monitor follicle development. The eggs are collected from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure lasting around 20 to 30 minutes and are frozen on the same day.

When pregnancy is planned, the frozen eggs are examined after being placed in a special warming solution. Eggs that successfully survive the process are fertilised through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in which a sperm is directly injected into an egg. Once an embryo is prepared, it is transferred to the uterus.
