**New Delhi:** The Union Cabinet has approved raising the wage ceiling for Employees’ Provident Fund benefits from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, a move that will extend the benefits to more than 51 lakh additional employees. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the revised ceiling will come into effect from Vishwakarma Day.

The wage ceiling, which was fixed in 2014, is being revised after 12 years. With the increase, newly covered employees will be eligible not only for a PF account but also for benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme.

At present, both the employee and employer contribute 12% of wages towards PF. Under the existing wage ceiling of ₹15,000, the maximum monthly contribution from each side was ₹1,800. With the ceiling increased to ₹25,000, the monthly contribution from both the employee and employer will rise to ₹3,000 each. However, employees earning more than ₹25,000 will not be required to make PF contributions under the revised wage ceiling.

The increase in the wage ceiling will result in an additional annual financial burden of ₹11,339 crore for the Central Government. The additional expenditure over five years is estimated at ₹56,696 crore. The wage ceiling was last increased from ₹6,500 to ₹15,000 in September 2014.

The report states that EPF benefits are currently available to 7.98 crore employees across 7.68 lakh establishments, while 82 lakh people receive pensions.Meanwhile, N.K. Premachandran, MP, said the decision reflects the outcome of a private member’s resolution raised in Parliament concerning the demands of EPF pensioners. According to Premachandran, a committee appointed following the resolution had made recommendations that were considered by the government. He further said that other recommendations, including an increase in the minimum pension, are also under consideration.
