**New Delhi:** India has warned that the proposed US tariff measures targeting countries that purchase Russian oil could affect bilateral relations, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring energy security for its 140 crore people. The warning came after the US Congress passed a bill that could allow tariffs of up to 100% on countries including India and China over purchases of Russian energy.

India has maintained that it will continue to ensure the energy security of its population by relying on diversified sources and adapting its approach according to changing market conditions. The Ministry of External Affairs made the statement while referring to the country's imports from Russia.

India had also conveyed its concerns during high-level discussions with US representatives. The ministry said the government would work with trade and industry organisations in the country to address the situation and deal with its possible implications.

The bill will become law once it is signed by US President Donald Trump. The legislation seeks to impose wide-ranging sanctions on Russia's energy sector, with the stated objective of cutting off economic resources that, according to its proponents, help Russia continue the war against Ukraine.

The US House of Representatives passed the bill by 262 votes to 159. According to the supplied report, 58 members of the opposition Democratic Party supported the measure, while seven Republicans opposed it. The US Senate had previously passed the bill by a large majority of 86-11.

The proposed sanctions target officials associated with Russia's fuel trade, banks and oil tankers. The bill also proposes allowing tariffs of up to 100% on India, China, Turkey, Slovakia and Hungary, described in the report as major importers of Russian crude oil or natural gas.

The legislation followed a year of pressure from Republican Party leaders for stronger sanctions against Russia. The bill also includes a provision to extend sanctions against Iran for another five years. Republicans have said the measure is aimed at countries such as India and China, while Democrats have criticised the possible use of the law against allied countries in the European Union. They have also warned that higher tariffs could contribute to increased prices in the US market.
