Thiruvananthapuram: China’s Tiangong space station will be visible to people across Kerala with the naked eye today, with the station expected to appear in the evening sky at around 7.26 pm and remain visible until approximately 7.30 pm. Although Tiangong has been visible from Kerala on earlier occasions, clear visibility across the state is considered relatively rare.

The space station, which has been orbiting Earth for the past three years, travels along an orbital path approximately 400 kilometres above the Earth’s surface. According to the available information, three Chinese astronauts are currently aboard Tiangong, carrying out experimental and observational activities.

For viewers in Kerala, the four-minute window beginning at 7.26 pm is expected to provide the best opportunity to observe the station. At around 7.26 pm, Tiangong will appear over the northwestern part of Kerala, above the Arabian Sea, before moving southward across the state. It will also be visible earlier along the Konkan coast.

The station is expected to move from the northern Malabar region towards southern Kerala. During this period, people across Kerala are expected to have a clearer view of the spacecraft. By around 7.30 pm, Tiangong will have moved across southern Tamil Nadu, and at approximately 7.31 pm it will continue towards Sri Lanka, after which it will disappear from view for observers in Kerala.

Tiangong is built in a shape resembling the English letter ‘T’ and may appear somewhat like a dragonfly when viewed from the ground. Its brightness can help observers distinguish it from other objects in the night sky. At present, apart from the Sun, Moon and International Space Station (ISS), Tiangong is described as one of the brightest human-made objects visible in the sky.

The station reportedly appears to have a brightness comparable to that associated with Venus, although it is less bright. In terms of orbital speed, the International Space Station and Tiangong travel at broadly similar speeds.
