The Kerala government has issued an order upgrading eight single-teacher schools in the state to Lower Primary schools. With this decision, the state’s remaining single-teacher schools have been brought under the LP school category, effectively ending the existence of single-teacher schools in Kerala.

The decision has been taken as part of the state government’s 100-day action programme. The eight single-teacher schools located in different districts have been selected for the upgrade to LP schools.

The schools upgraded under the government order are located at Melmuri in Malappuram, Arimangalam in Areekode, Kalamthuruthy in Tanur, Arimanal in Wandoor, Tharikulam in Manjeri, Alur in Kasaragod, Kurathikkudy in Idukki and Kalanki in Kannur.

The state-level inauguration of the programme will be held at the Melmuri M.G.L.C. in the Kizhisseri sub-district of Malappuram. The inauguration is scheduled for October 2 at 10 am and will be performed by Minister N. Shamsuddin.

The government’s move brings a change in the status of the eight institutions, which had been functioning as single-teacher schools. Their elevation to LP schools comes as part of the measures being implemented under the 100-day action programme.

The upgraded institutions are spread across Malappuram, Kasaragod, Idukki and Kannur districts. The order covers schools in Melmuri, Areekode, Tanur, Wandoor, Manjeri, Alur, Kurathikkudy and Kalanki.

The state-level inauguration at Melmuri M.G.L.C. will formally mark the implementation of the decision. With the upgrading of these eight institutions, the government has stated that single-teacher schools in the state will no longer remain as a separate category.
