**Thiruvananthapuram:** An investigation into Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan, former minister P A Mohammed Riyas and his wife T Veena in connection with the CMRL-Exalogic financial transaction case is set to proceed following legal advice obtained by the Kerala government, according to a report. The Advocate General has reportedly advised the government that there is no legal impediment to conducting an investigation based on the Enforcement Directorate report and new evidence.

A Vigilance investigation is considered a possibility. However, since the government reportedly views the matter as serious, a probe by the Crime Branch or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) may also be considered. The ED report is said to contain details of financial transactions involving several crores of rupees in addition to the CMRL-Exalogic transactions, and these matters are also expected to come under investigation, according to the report.

In its letter, the ED had alleged that the ₹3.28 crore paid by Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL) to Veena and her company, Exalogic Solutions, constituted a bribe intended for Pinarayi Vijayan. This is an allegation attributed to the ED and has not been presented here as an established fact. The ED has reportedly recommended registering a case against Pinarayi Vijayan and Riyas under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The allegation concerning a hawala transaction linked to Riyas emerged more recently. According to the ED's letter, statements given by people close to Riyas allegedly indicated that money received through him was sent to Dubai through a hawala channel. The ED also reportedly recovered diary entries attributed to Veena during a search, which it said supported the transactions. These claims represent the ED's position as reported in its letter.

The development follows the state government's decision to seek legal advice on the ED's recommendation. Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala had said that further action would be taken after receiving the legal opinion and discussing the matter with the Chief Minister.

The CMRL-Exalogic matter remains subject to investigation and legal proceedings. Reports have also noted that two senior CMRL officials subsequently retracted statements they had earlier given to the ED, alleging that those statements were obtained under pressure and intimidation.
