**New Delhi:** Mainstream television news channels faced a credibility crisis in their coverage of the Cockroach Janata Party protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, while independent digital platforms and print newspapers played a more prominent role in covering the agitation, according to a report by the Editors Guild of India. The findings were included in the Guild’s ‘State of Media’ report, which analysed the coverage of the CJP protest by different media organisations.

The report examined coverage by Hindi newspapers such as *Hindustan* and *Dainik Bhaskar*, English newspapers including *The Times of India*, *The Hindu* and *The Indian Express*, independent digital platforms such as *The News Minute* and *Scroll.in*, and international media organisations including the BBC, *The New York Times*, Al Jazeera and Reuters. It also looked at coverage by mainstream television channels including Republic, Times Now, Aaj Tak, ABP News, TV9 Bharatvarsh and India TV. ([News Minimalist][1])

According to the report, television channels often ignored the protest or sought to portray it in a negative manner. It said Hindi television channels largely repeated the government’s position while covering the agitation.

In contrast, the report stated that independent digital media organisations and international media outlets gave greater attention to the issues raised by students during the protest. Newspapers were also described as providing substantial coverage of the agitation and raising questions about the government.

> The report further pointed to instances in which some journalists faced chants of “Godi Media” during the protest. It described these incidents as reflecting growing distrust among sections of the public towards mainstream television channels.

The Editors Guild had separately condemned attacks on journalists during the Jantar Mantar protests while also warning that flawed or biased reporting could undermine the credibility of the media. The Guild also stressed that violence against media representatives could not be justified.
