**Thiruvananthapuram: **The Kerala government has ordered an investigation against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and former minister Mohammed Riyas in connection with the CMRL monthly payment case, based on a recommendation from the Enforcement Directorate . Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala directed the State Police Chief to proceed with the investigation after consultations with the Chief Minister. The decision followed legal advice that an investigation could be conducted on the basis of the ED’s letter.

The ED had written to the State Police Chief seeking action under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to the ED’s position, Pinarayi Vijayan allegedly received bribe money from Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) through his daughter T Veena. The agency had sought registration of a case against Pinarayi Vijayan, Mohammed Riyas and Veena in connection with the allegations.

The State Police Chief subsequently forwarded the ED’s communication to the state government. The government then decided to seek legal advice on whether an investigation could be initiated based on the contents of the ED letter.

According to the reported legal opinion, there was no legal impediment to conducting an investigation based on the ED’s communication. The government has now proceeded with the investigation following that advice.

The ED’s communication was based on findings from its investigation into the CMRL-Exalogic transactions. The agency has alleged that payments made by CMRL to Veena’s company and related transactions amounted to illegal payments. These remain allegations made by the investigating agency and will be subject to examination during the investigation.

The case concerns transactions involving CMRL and Exalogic Solutions, a company associated with Veena. The ED has also raised allegations concerning financial transactions involving Mohammed Riyas. The investigation ordered by the government is expected to examine the allegations and the material referred to in the ED’s communication.
