The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court has rejected the plea filed by the accused in the Abhimanyu murder case seeking an in-camera trial. The case relates to the killing of Maharajas College student Abhimanyu. Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court Judge K K Balakrishnan pronounced the order on the application filed by the accused, who are members of the Popular Front and Campus Front, as stated in the report.

The defence had argued that an open trial could affect the accused’s future lives and that there was a possibility of witnesses being influenced. The prosecution, however, strongly opposed the request for an in-camera trial and argued that the proceedings should remain open.

Special Public Prosecutor G Mohanraj, who appeared for the prosecution, said that journalists have the right to report court proceedings and that this right should not be denied under any circumstances. The prosecution also argued that police would be able to control college students if they came to the court to attend the proceedings.

The accused had also requested restrictions on the entry of journalists and members of the public to the court and sought to prevent photographs of them from being taken and circulated. Since the court where the trial is being conducted is located near Maharajas College, the accused also sought restrictions on allowing college students to gather in the court premises.

The prosecution reportedly argued that the claim that attempts had been made to photograph the accused, who are currently out on bail, inside the court was not a valid ground for restricting the proceedings.

The trial in the case is scheduled to begin on October 15. Judge K K Balakrishnan rejected the arguments raised by the defence and ordered that the trial proceed. There are a total of 16 accused in the case.

Abhimanyu was killed on July 2, 2018. According to the case, members of the Popular Front and Campus Front were involved in the killing. The trial is beginning eight years after the incident.
