New Delhi: The Central Government has warned against the excessive and improper use of painkillers and antibiotics, directing medical stores and medicine distributors not to sell these medicines without a doctor’s prescription. The Drug Controller General has issued strict instructions in this regard. People have also been advised not to take antibiotics on their own for common health problems such as fever and infections. The Drug Controller General warned that excessive and irrational use of medicines could lead to long-term health problems.

According to the directive, people with kidney disease should inform their doctor before using painkillers. The Drugs Control Department has also instructed pharmacists not to encourage self-medication. The circular states that irrational use of medicines could lead to various health problems.

Many people reportedly take painkillers on their own for common health problems such as headaches, body aches and fever. Similarly, the practice of taking antibiotics without confirming a bacterial infection or consulting a doctor has also raised concerns.

The authorities have advised that antibiotics should be used only when necessary and strictly according to a doctor’s advice. Unnecessary use of antibiotics can contribute to the growth of bacteria that develop resistance to medicines. Therefore, antibiotics should not be taken without proper medical guidance.

The directive also warns people against reusing antibiotics that were prescribed by a doctor for an earlier illness. Medicines prescribed for a previous condition should not be taken again on one’s own without medical advice.

People experiencing persistent pain or other health symptoms have been advised to consult a doctor to identify the underlying cause instead of resorting to self-medication. The Drugs Control Department has stressed the need for caution in the use of medicines and advised against self-treatment.

The instructions are aimed at discouraging the unnecessary and irrational use of painkillers and antibiotics. Medical stores, distributors and pharmacists have been directed to follow the prescription requirement, while the public has been advised to seek medical guidance before using such medicines.
