Kochi: The Kerala High Court has granted bail to Kavya K., 29, a native of Koyilandy and the third accused in the Vadakara MDMA case involving teachers. Justice Kausar Edappagath granted bail after noting that the investigation was almost complete and that the material evidence had already been recovered. The court also noted that Kavya had no previous criminal background and held that she did not need to remain in custody any longer.

Kavya had been in remand since July 25. The bail was granted subject to strict conditions. She has to furnish a bond of ₹1 lakh along with two sureties for the same amount. She must appear before the investigating officer every Saturday, must not attempt to influence witnesses and cannot leave the state without the permission of the trial court.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that Kavya was innocent and had been wrongly implicated in the case. The defence also submitted that there was no evidence directly connecting her with the alleged offence and sought bail on that ground.

The Public Prosecutor opposed the bail plea, arguing that the incident was part of an offence allegedly committed knowingly by the petitioner and that granting bail at this stage could affect the investigation.

The case began after Safwan, a young man, was allegedly caught with MDMA at around 2 a.m. on June 28 in front of Rolex Oil Industries on Ice Plant Road in Vadakara. The investigation subsequently revealed the alleged involvement of teachers, according to the prosecution.

Those arrested later included Keerthana, 31, a special educator at the Perambra BRC and a native of Maruthonkara; K. Kavya, 29, a teacher at the Autism Centre functioning at Cheruvaloor Government LP School and a native of Cherukattu in Koorachundu; V.P. Neeshma, 30, a special educator at the Perambra BRC and a native of Avala Kuttooth Valiyaparambil; and Jijil Kuriyakose, a native of Iritty and an online delivery agent.

Police seized 2.108 grams of MDMA from the possession of the first accused, according to the case details. The prosecution alleges that the accused conspired to transport and sell the narcotic substance and that financial transactions connected with the alleged activities took place through the bank accounts of Kavya and the second accused. The High Court had earlier granted bail to Keerthana, the second accused.
