**Thiruvananthapuram:** A gold crown weighing 55.72 pavan, which was kept in the strong room at the Sabarimala Sannidhanam, has been found missing during an inventory of the sacred ornaments, according to the information available. The crown was reportedly offered by Ayyappa devotees from Tamil Nadu in August 2012. Although the register records that the crown was offered, the crown currently kept in the strong room is reportedly an imitation crown of the same design and size. The imitation crown also has a white stone resembling a diamond set in it.

When the crown was offered by the devotees in 2012, its total weight was recorded as 445.78 grams. However, the imitation crown currently kept in the strong room weighs only 240 grams. The crown was valued at Rs 26 lakh at the time it was offered, while its current value is reportedly around Rs 62 lakh.

The crown was offered at Sabarimala on August 17, 2012, when the temple opened at dawn on the first day of Chingam. The devotees from Tamil Nadu were chartered accountants and Ayyappa devotees. A receipt was issued for the offering. The crown was subsequently taken to the sanctum sanctorum and placed on the Ayyappa idol before being moved to the strong room at the Sannidhanam. There was no CCTV surveillance inside the strong room.

As per the reported procedure, valuable items received at Sabarimala are temporarily kept in the strong room at the Sannidhanam. They are subsequently supposed to be transferred to the Travancore Devaswom Board's strong room at Aranmula. However, the available information indicates that this gold crown had not been transferred to Aranmula. What happened to the crown afterward can be established only through a detailed investigation.

Meanwhile, a four-pavan gold chain has also been reported missing from the Travancore Devaswom Board-owned strong room at Aranmula. The disappearance of gem-studded silver horns from the OTC Hanuman Temple near the Legislative Assembly building in Thiruvananthapuram has also come to light. Devaswom Board President K. Jayakumar has ordered an inquiry into the incidents.

Against the backdrop of the reported Sabarimala gold theft, the inventory of valuables at Sabarimala is in its final stage under the leadership of Justice K.T. Shankaran, the amicus curiae appointed by the High Court.

There are specific procedures governing the Sabarimala strong room. The Administrator and Executive Officer at the Sannidhanam are appointed for one year each. The rules stipulate that the strong room can be opened only during daytime. The key is kept with the Administrative Officer responsible for the strong room, and the room must be opened in the presence of the Executive Officer. The rules also state that all procedures from the opening of the room until its closure must be recorded in a mahazar, with a Devaswom guard also required to be present.
