**Thiruvananthapuram: **The National Centre for Coastal Research and the National Centre for Ocean Information Services has warned of the possibility of the ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon and strong high waves along all coastal districts of Kerala. A red alert has been issued across the state’s coastal districts in view of the warning. According to the alert, waves measuring between 1.0 metres and 1.5 metres in height, along with sea attacks, are likely from 2:30 am on Saturday until 2:30 am on Monday.

The warning states that coastal areas, particularly low-lying regions, face an increased possibility of seawater entering the land and sea attacks. Special caution has been advised from Kappil to Pozhiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram district and from Alappad to Edava in Kollam district. In Alappuzha, the alert covers the stretch from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty, while in Ernakulam, caution has been advised from Munambam F.H. to Maruvakkad.

In Thrissur district, the specified area extends from Aattupuram to Kodungallur. In Malappuram, the alert covers the stretch from Kadalundi Nagaram to Palappetty. In Kozhikode, caution has been advised from Chombala F.H. to Ramanattukara. The specified areas in Kannur are from Valapattanam to New Mahe, while in Kasaragod, the warning covers the stretch from Kunjathur to Kottakunnu.

Apart from Kerala, a cautionary warning related to the Kallakkadal phenomenon has also been issued for the coastal areas of Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, as well as the Lakshadweep coast.

Caution for Fishermen and Coastal Residents

The warning advises residents to move away from vulnerable areas as directed by authorities, as sea conditions may worsen. Small boats and fishing vessels should not be taken out to sea during this period. According to the advisory, bringing fishing vessels back to shore can be as dangerous as taking them into the sea when the Kallakkadal phenomenon and high waves are expected. Therefore, both launching vessels into the sea and bringing them back to shore should be avoided when wave conditions intensify.

All activities centred around beaches, including tourism-related activities, should be completely avoided until the warning is withdrawn. Fishing vessels, including boats and small craft, should be securely tied and kept at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between vessels can help prevent accidents caused by collisions. The safety of fishing equipment should also be ensured.Travel to beaches and recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided. The advisory also calls for special caution because of the possibility of coastal erosion.
