Thiruvananthapuram: Former Kerala Election Commissioner Teeka Ram Meena has called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign and apologise to the people, alleging that his actions amounted to an attempt to undermine democracy. Meena also alleged that Kumar had committed a serious offence and received protection at a high level. He said the reported differences within the Election Commission were a matter of serious concern.

> According to Meena, the differences were linked to what he described as unilateral decision-making by Kumar. “He is taking decisions unilaterally like a dictator. That is illegal. Decisions should be taken according to the majority view. But he did not respect that,” Meena said. He further alleged that such actions affected the transparency, impartiality and integrity of the electoral process.

Meena also pointed out that the Constitution requires the election process to remain independent and fair, and alleged that this principle had not been followed.

> “The Election Commission is a constitutional institution. What is the relationship between the ruling party and the Election Commission? Why does the Election Commission need the protection of the government? It is an institution that should function independently. It does not need the protection of the government or the ruling party,” Meena said. He added that former Election Commissioners had followed this approach.

Meena also described as serious the disclosure by Jiji Thomson that Gyanesh Kumar had allegedly suggested that he contest as a BJP candidate. Meena questioned how impartiality could be expected from Kumar if such an invitation had been made. The claim was part of Meena’s comments and was presented by him in the context of his concerns over the Election Commission’s independence.

The former Kerala Election Commissioner further alleged that Gyanesh Kumar had a good relationship with the BJP, which he described as the party governing at the Centre, and said the two were cooperating with each other.

Meena’s remarks came amid reports of differences within the Election Commission over Kumar’s actions. He had also previously raised criticism regarding the Commission’s functioning, including measures related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and changes to Form 6.
