Banks across the country will remain open for business on Sunday, September 27, in a rare move aimed at reducing customer inconvenience ahead of a three-day strike announced by employees’ unions from Monday. The Union Finance Ministry ordered banks to treat Sunday as a working day, also taking into consideration the need to complete financial-year first-half account closing activities.

Banks are scheduled to return to normal operations on October 1 after the three-day strike. However, October 2 will be a public holiday on account of Gandhi Jayanti. October 3, being the first Saturday of the month, will be a working day. As a result, including Sunday, banks will function at full capacity for three days this week.

Banks have stated that digital banking systems will be operated at full capacity during the strike, considering the possibility of disruptions at bank branches. Online services are expected to remain unaffected by the strike. Automated and mandated transactions, including EMI payments, are also expected to continue without interruption.

ATM services are also expected to remain available without disruption. Since Sunday has been declared a working day, banks will ensure adequate cash availability at ATMs. Public sector banks have stated that customers will be able to withdraw money through ATMs any number of times on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday without being charged a fee.

Banks have also clarified that customers will be able to withdraw cash from any ATM without considering the usual monthly withdrawal limits.

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) claims that 90 per cent of bank employees support the strike. If the claimed level of participation materialises, banking operations across the country could face widespread disruption during the three-day strike.
