A major clash broke out at Lovely Professional University in Punjab in the early hours of today following social media posts alleging that a female student staying in the campus hostel had been sexually assaulted. Students reportedly set fire to several vehicles parked inside the campus and vandalised multiple parts of the university premises.

Posts claiming that a girl residing in the campus hostel had been subjected to sexual assault have been circulating on social media for the past two days. According to the position of the protesting students, the unrest began because the university had not taken significant steps to investigate the matter despite the circulation of such reports.

After damaging property inside the campus, the students moved onto the Phagwara-Jalandhar National Highway. Their protest caused traffic disruption on the highway for several hours. Police and university authorities subsequently reached the location and attempted to calm the students. Police assured the students that the incident would be investigated.

However, the university has stated that no investigation was initiated because it had not received an official complaint regarding the alleged incident. University authorities have also warned students not to be misled by false information and rumours circulating on social media.

The developments followed growing concern among students over the social media posts concerning the alleged sexual assault. While students demanded action and an investigation, the university maintained that the absence of an official complaint was the reason for the lack of an inquiry. The police have assured the students that the matter will be investigated, while the university has urged students to exercise caution regarding unverified claims.
