**Dammam: **The death sentence of Malayali man Abuti Vellil, 41, a native of Mahe Peringadi in Thalassery, Kannur, was carried out in Dammam on Sunday morning in a case involving an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of drugs into Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Ministry of Interior officially announced that the sentence had been carried out and informed the Indian Embassy.

According to the authorities, the incident leading to the case took place in 2023. Saudi security forces arrested Abuti Vellil at the border while he was allegedly attempting to enter Saudi Arabia by land from Oman.

The authorities said that a quantity of drugs weighing approximately 43 kilograms was seized from his possession at the time of the arrest. The seizure and the circumstances of the arrest formed the basis of the case against him.During the subsequent legal proceedings, the trial court sentenced the accused to death. The death sentence was later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

Following approval from the Supreme Court, a royal decree was issued by the Saudi ruler. The execution was carried out thereafter, according to the details officially communicated by the Saudi authorities.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior formally reported the execution to the Indian Embassy. Abuti Vellil, a 41-year-old native of Mahe Peringadi, was therefore executed in Dammam after the death sentence passed by the trial court and subsequently upheld by the appellate court received Supreme Court approval and was followed by the issuance of the royal decree.
