**Thiruvananthapuram:** The firework offering at the Sabarimala temple has come under uncertainty following a letter from the tantri stating that the offering is not part of the temple’s traditional rituals and security concerns raised by the Central Intelligence Bureau . The Travancore Devaswom Board has not included the firework offering in the tender invited for the upcoming Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. The existing contract for the offering will expire on November 15.

According to the information contained in a letter issued by Mahesh Mohanar, when he was the tantri, the firework offering has no place in the tantric rituals or worship procedures of the temple. The letter reportedly states that the offering was introduced over time as a practice associated with devotees’ offerings. The letter could pave the way for the Devaswom Board to consider discontinuing the offering. The Board is expected to discuss the matter with the Pathanamthitta District Collector.

Around six months ago, two officials from the Central Intelligence Bureau visited Sabarimala and collected details regarding the firework offering. They examined the location where explosives are stored, the manner in which they are handled and the distance between the storage facility and areas where pilgrims gather.

The officials reportedly indicated that the firework offering could not continue in its present form. They also pointed out that the safety requirements specified under the Central Explosives Act of 1884 and the rules introduced in 2008 were not being followed.

The regulations require a prescribed distance to be maintained between an explosives storage facility and areas where people gather. At Sabarimala, where lakhs of pilgrims gather, maintaining the required distance is considered impractical. The IB also reportedly referred to an incident three years ago in which explosives caught fire at Malikappuram, resulting in the deaths of two people. The licence for the firework offering is issued in the name of the Sabarimala Executive Officer. In the event of an accident, the legal responsibility rests with the Executive Officer.
