**Kozhikode**: Minister K. M. Shaji’s remarks about the progress and changing outlook of Muslim girls have triggered a fresh controversy. Shaji expressed concern that Muslim girls who have progressed educationally are moving backwards in terms of religious belief. Critics have alleged that the minister spoke more like a religious scholar than a minister and argued that such remarks amount to an intrusion into the individual freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.

The remarks were made by K. M. Shaji at the national seminar on ‘Democracy and Development’ organised by the C. H. Chair at Calicut University. The minister mainly expressed concern that although Muslim girls are progressing in the field of education, they are increasingly being attracted to atheist ideas.

Shaji said that the community and its organisations should properly guide and regulate these girls. He also alleged in his speech that a majority of educated Muslim girls were following the ideas and social media pages of atheists.

According to Shaji, the changes among Muslim girls cannot be viewed simply as ordinary progress and should instead be described as a ‘leap’. Critics have demanded that the minister clarify what exactly he meant by the term ‘leap’.

Shaji also said that the efforts of Muslim League leaders, including C. H. Mohammed Koya, had helped girls move from their homes to schools and colleges. However, he expressed concern that political and religious organisations had failed to properly guide or address the growth of these girls.

He further opined that, due to the lack of proper guidance, girls were becoming followers of atheists and moving away from their faith. These remarks have led to criticism.Critics have strongly questioned the propriety of a public representative or a person holding a constitutional position speaking to girls in a manner similar to a religious leader or scholar.

They have also pointed out that every citizen who has attained the age of 18 has a constitutional right to choose their preferred religion, atheism or other ideas. Critics argue that statements of this nature amount to interference with those rights. They further contend that public representatives who seek votes from people across communities should not make such remarks or offer such guidance.
