New Delhi: CPI Rajya Sabha MP A.A. Rahim alleged that police used force against the protesters and dragged some of the leaders into police vehicles.

The march was jointly organised by the CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) and Forward Bloc, with around 100 people taking part in the protest. The demonstration was led by senior Left leaders, including M.A. Baby, Brinda Karat, Subhashini Ali, Dr. V. Sivadasan and A.A. Rahim.

The protesters marched towards the Election Commission office in Delhi at around 1 pm. Police stopped the march near the Commission office. Following this, the protesters sat on the ground and raised slogans as part of their demonstration.

Police subsequently arrested the leaders and removed them from the protest site. According to A.A. Rahim, several leaders were dragged before being taken into police vehicles. He also alleged that police seized the protesters’ flags and tore up their placards.

The Left parties have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Left parties had earlier announced a series of protests over the issue.

The latest Delhi protest comes as opposition parties continue to raise questions about the functioning of the Election Commission and the voter-roll revision exercise. The allegations regarding police action during the march are those raised by the protesting leaders and are presented as their account of the incident.
