Kannur: Passengers in Malabar have raised complaints that the Railways is allegedly allowing more stops for special trains in southern Kerala while overlooking major stations in the Malabar region. During major festival seasons, the Railways announces special trains from Kerala to other states based on passenger demand. However, passengers allege that several of these services often bypass important stations in Malabar despite the large number of travellers using them.

On the Shoranur–Mangaluru route, special and festival trains generally receive stops at Tirur and Kozhikode. Some services also stop at Vadakara, Kannur and Kasaragod. However, major stations such as Kuttippuram, Koyilandy, Thalassery, Payyannur and Kanhangad are often left out, passengers allege. They also point out that several special trains are given stops at comparatively smaller stations in southern Kerala.

The Thiruvananthapuram North–Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Thiruvananthapuram North Special Fare Festival trains operate on Saturdays and Thursdays, respectively. In Malabar, stops have been provided at Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Tirur and Shoranur. In contrast, seven stops have been provided between Kottayam and Kollam: Changanassery, Tiruvalla, Chengannur, Mavelikara, Kayamkulam Junction, Karunagappally and Sasthamkotta.

Passengers have pointed out a similar pattern in the Thiruvananthapuram–Madar Junction Puja Holiday Special. The Thiruvananthapuram Central–Madar Junction–Thiruvananthapuram Central Festival Special Express will operate from the last week of this month to the last week of November. In Malabar, the train has stops at Tirur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. In southern Kerala, stops have been provided at Kayamkulam Junction, Mavelikara, Chengannur, Tiruvalla and Changanassery.

According to figures for the 2025–26 financial year, the revenue and passenger numbers of major Malabar railway stations are as follows: Kozhikode recorded revenue of Rs 219 crore and 3.24 crore passengers; Kannur Rs 136 crore and 1.86 crore passengers; Shoranur Rs 56 crore and 78 lakh passengers; Kasaragod Rs 48 crore and 90 lakh passengers; Thalassery Rs 45 crore and 1.01 crore passengers; Tirur Rs 39 crore and 85 lakh passengers; Vadakara Rs 32 crore and 92 lakh passengers; Payyannur Rs 27 crore and 59 lakh passengers; Kanhangad Rs 20 crore and 44 lakh passengers; Kuttippuram Rs 16 crore and 45 lakh passengers; and Koyilandy Rs 1 crore and 40 lakh passengers.

The figures indicate that the first ten major railway stations in Malabar, including Shoranur, generated more than Rs 650 crore in railway revenue during the last financial year. Passengers have protested against the lack of stops for these trains at Thalassery and Vadakara, two major stations in Kannur and Kozhikode districts.

According to the suburban grade list prepared by the Railways based on annual revenue and passenger numbers, Thalassery and Vadakara rank third. While these trains have five stops across 55 kilometres between Kollam and Kottayam, there is not even a single stop across the 90-kilometre stretch between Kozhikode and Kannur. Between Kottayam and Kozhikode, the trains have only five stops across 252 kilometres.
