India’s orbital computing ambitions are set to take a major step forward with the launch of MOI-1A, an orbital computing satellite developed by Hyderabad-based startup TakeMe2Space. The satellite is scheduled to be launched on October 1, Thursday, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The company describes MOI-1A as India’s first orbital computing satellite.

Satellites can collect large volumes of data, ranging from images of agricultural fields and forests to information about infrastructure and ships. Traditionally, much of this data is transmitted back to Earth, where computers analyse it. This process can take considerable time and requires substantial bandwidth.

An orbital computing satellite works differently by carrying out part of the computing and data-processing operations while still in orbit. This allows the satellite to analyse information in space before sending selected data to Earth.

A Computer in Orbit

MOI-1A is designed as a small computer operating in space. The satellite is equipped with Nvidia Orin NX edge-computing processors, allowing AI models to operate while the satellite orbits Earth. The satellite weighs less than 50 kilograms.

The satellite will scan Earth-observation images in orbit and transmit only useful information to the ground, reducing the need to send entire sets of raw data. According to TakeMe2Space, an AI model can also be instructed from Earth to examine specific changes in a particular region.

The company says its customers will be able to upload AI models for data analysis. TakeMe2Space claims to already have 23 customers across sectors including agriculture, mining, supply chain and insurance.

Future Plans

TakeMe2Space had earlier conducted an experimental launch in December 2024 using ISRO’s PSLV-C60. The mission was aimed at testing orbital computing technology.

The Hyderabad-based startup has larger plans for the technology and aims to develop a large network of orbital computing satellites in the future. The company expects the technology to potentially become one of the major centres for orbital data processing.
