KOCHI: CNG prices in Kerala have moved above diesel prices, affecting vehicle owners who had switched to CNG to cope with rising petrol and diesel costs. On Thursday, diesel was priced at Rs 102.45 per litre in Kochi, while CNG cost Rs 102.50 per kg. Petrol was priced at Rs 113.53 per litre.

Many vehicle owners had shifted to CNG as diesel prices continued to rise. The recent increase in CNG prices has now become a setback for them. The rise in crude oil prices is being cited as the reason for the increase in CNG prices.

The price difference between CNG and diesel was much wider eight years ago. At that time, diesel cost Rs 71 per litre, while CNG was available at Rs 46.50 per kg. CNG was therefore Rs 24.50 cheaper than diesel.

The significant difference in fuel prices attracted many vehicle owners to CNG-powered vehicles over the years. However, with CNG prices now rising rapidly, those who had switched to the fuel are facing increased costs. The price gap that once made CNG an attractive alternative to diesel has narrowed considerably in Kochi.

CNG prices also vary from one district to another. The differences in prices across districts add to the variation in fuel costs for vehicle owners. The latest prices in Kochi show that CNG, which was once considerably cheaper than diesel, is now priced slightly higher than diesel per unit.
