News Content: Central Tourism Ministry Joint Secretary S. Harikishore has presented five ideas to strengthen the tourism sector in Malabar at a tourism conclave, including attracting major hotel brands, promoting Malabar through Kochi and developing themed tourism programmes.

Harikishore proposed organising one-to-one investor meetings with 20 leading hotel chains to bring national and international brands to Malabar. He suggested ensuring land and fast-track approvals for investors seeking to establish hotels in the region.

He pointed out that major hotel groups have a wide presence across the world, while their presence in Malabar remains limited. IHCL, which includes Taj, Gateway, Vivanta and Ginger, has 375 properties, while Marriott International has 200, ITC Hotels 150, Radisson 142 and Lemon Tree Hotels 130.

Another proposal was to target Kochi as a gateway for promoting Malabar. According to Harikishore, tourists arriving in Kochi generally travel to the southern districts. He suggested working with tour operators and destination management companies in Kochi to organise trips introducing visitors to Malabar.

He also proposed a special festival unique to Malabar, such as a 100-day Theyyam festival. The event could provide opportunities to experience more than 400 different Theyyam performances across Kannur, Kasaragod and Kozhikode districts.A calendar could be prepared covering the dates, locations and different Theyyam performances from mid-October to the end of May or another suitable period, he said.

Harikishore also suggested focusing on three tourism themes over the next three years. Ayurveda and wellness could receive priority in 2026-27, culture and heritage, including a Theyyam festival, in 2027-28, and adventure tourism in 2028-29.

He further proposed implementing a Malabar version of the Heritage 2.0 initiative of the Union Ministry of Culture to improve facilities at heritage sites and monuments with support from private companies. He said 31 memorandums of understanding had already been signed under the initiative.
