India is planning to build a 150-kilometre road in the strategically important eastern Ladakh border region to strengthen connectivity to Daulat Beg Oldi, according to a News18 report.

The proposed road will run along the eastern bank of the Shyok River. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is preparing a detailed project report for the proposed route, the report said.According to the report, the new road is expected to provide improved security and faster connectivity to Depsang, areas near the Line of Actual Control and military facilities at Daulat Beg Oldi, a strategically important location.

The proposed road is being planned as an alternative route to the existing Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi road. The additional route is intended to strengthen connectivity to the strategically important areas of eastern Ladakh. The road will pass through difficult terrain, with extreme cold, landslides and river flows caused by melting ice creating significant construction challenges.

The proposed road is planned to be built in five phases. According to the report, its design and structure will be determined while also taking into account the potential for future development in the region.

The project is expected to strengthen logistical connectivity in the border area. The report said the new road could help ensure uninterrupted movement of soldiers, weapons, fuel and other supplies to the area.

The proposed route forms part of efforts to improve road connectivity in a challenging border environment. The BRO is currently preparing the detailed project report for the project, according to the News18 report.

The proposed 150-kilometre road would provide an additional connectivity option alongside the existing route, with its construction expected to address the logistical challenges posed by the region's difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions.
