KOTTAYAM: Relatives of a 49-year-old woman who died after undergoing hernia surgery at Kottayam Medical College Hospital have filed a police complaint alleging a lapse in treatment. The deceased has been identified as Hasina of Puthuppally Pudhuparambil House in Changanassery.

According to her relatives, Hasina was admitted to the hospital on the 17th of last month for surgery. The procedure was performed on the 18th, after which she was shifted to a ward. On the 26th, she was advised to be discharged while she was still experiencing physical discomfort, severe abdominal pain and fever, the relatives said.

The relatives alleged that they informed the authorities about her condition but that she was given paracetamol tablets and sent home. After reaching home, Hasina's condition reportedly became critical. Blood and pus began to come out from the stitches at the surgical site, while her abdomen became red and swollen.

As her condition worsened, she was taken back to the hospital's emergency department on the night of the 28th, according to her relatives. They said doctors found a large amount of blood and pus accumulated in the abdomen. An attempt was made to drain the pus, but it was unsuccessful. She was then operated on again and shifted to the Critical Care ICU. She was later moved to the surgical ward on the 30th.

The relatives alleged that blood and pus again started coming from the surgical site. They said they repeatedly informed the authorities, but alleged that no adequate attention was given. According to them, they were told that wiping the blood and pus with cotton would be sufficient.

The relatives further alleged that adequate care was not provided even when there was heavy bleeding. Around 2 a.m. on Friday, her abdomen reportedly became swollen and the surgical stitches split, leading to heavy bleeding and discharge of pus. She was immediately shifted to the ICU but died around 3 a.m.

The body was handed over to the relatives after a postmortem examination.Hasina is survived by her husband, P.K. Hasankunju, and children Aseef, a second-year B.Com student at Assumption College, Changanassery, and Henna, a chartered accountant in Britain. Her siblings are Sheena, Sabina and Ashraf.
