NEW DELHI: India has identified 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh by standard place and feature names on the official Survey of India map. The exercise was carried out in consultation with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh. The government said the formal identification would help ensure accurate recognition of the locations and create greater public awareness about them.

The list covers a wide range of geographical features, including peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes, water bodies and land areas. Among the peaks are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.

Karun Pir, Drak Karpo and Jolmori have been identified as mountains. Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass are listed as passes, while Parpik and Skamri Glacier are identified as glaciers. The list also includes Shkorga Valley, Yangpa River, Guru Rinpoche Lake and Hot Spring. Seven other locations — Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa — are classified as land areas.

Gogra and Hot Spring are among the areas included in the list that had remained part of the India-China military tensions in eastern Ladakh following the 2020 Galwan clash. Indian and Chinese military deployments continue along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, while disengagement has taken place in some areas after military and diplomatic talks held in several rounds.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the places were formally identified on the Survey of India map to facilitate accurate recognition and improve public awareness. The official statement did not directly mention China or the border dispute.

The development also comes against the backdrop of China's earlier moves to assign Chinese names to places in Arunachal Pradesh and its claims over the region. India has rejected those renaming efforts and stated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India.
