Wayanad: A WhatsApp group allegedly created to defraud ordinary people has been operating by promising high returns within a short period after receiving money, according to information available about the scheme. The group, named ‘Riya Money Help’, is reportedly being used to target people without their knowledge or consent.

According to the reported modus operandi, people are added to the WhatsApp group without their permission. Messages are then sent explaining how they can allegedly earn money by making an initial payment.

One message reportedly claims that those who pay Rs 5,000 will receive Rs 18,000 within 15 minutes. Another promises Rs 30,000 within 45 minutes for a payment of Rs 10,000. Similar messages allegedly claim that a payment of Rs 90,000 could result in a return of up to Rs 4 lakh.

> The money is reportedly collected in the name of a “sending charge”. To gain people's trust, the group allegedly shares Google Pay screenshots of people who have supposedly sent money and received payments in return.

According to the information, the group may initially accept a small amount and send money back to convince members that the scheme is genuine. However, once a larger amount is paid, the person is allegedly removed from the group and their phone number is blocked.

Several people are believed to have lost money, although some may not have filed complaints due to embarrassment, according to the information. Similar fraudsters had earlier been active through Telegram, using promises of online jobs and income to target people.

People in the Mananthavady, Vythiri and Sulthan Bathery taluks, including prominent figures and those involved in social and public activities, have reportedly been added to such groups. There is a suspicion that the operation may be based in North India.

Police have said they have started an investigation into online WhatsApp groups involved in money fraud. The investigation is being conducted through the IT Cell. Authorities have advised people who are members of such groups to leave them as soon as possible and said immediate action would be taken to identify those behind the alleged fraud.
