THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former IPS officer and BJP councillor R. Sreelekha’s resignation from the Sasthamangalam ward has reduced the ruling NDA’s strength in the 101-member Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to 50, including the support of an Independent. Mayor V.V. Rajesh has confirmed receiving her resignation letter, in which she cited personal reasons.

The BJP won 50 wards in the 2025 local body election but fell one seat short of a simple majority. Independent councillor Pattur Radhakrishnan, elected from Kannammoola ward, later extended support to the NDA administration led by Rajesh.

The council originally had the NDA at 51 with the Independent’s support, the LDF at 29, the UDF at 20 and one other member. The BJP’s position had already been affected by the absence of Vazhottukonam councillor R. Sugathan. He is currently in jail after being arrested under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, or KAAPA.

Sreelekha’s resignation now reduces the BJP’s own strength to 49 and the ruling side’s support to 50. Reports say she submitted the letter to Mayor Rajesh on September 30. The development has also renewed discussion over the opposition’s approach in the Corporation. The LDF has 29 councillors and the UDF 20. After the local body election, leaders of both fronts had rejected the possibility of joining hands to keep the BJP out of power.

In June, the UDF had planned a no-confidence motion against the Rajesh-led administration. The move required support from one-third of the council members, but the UDF had only 20 councillors. With the LDF unwilling to support the proposal, the UDF withdrew the move.

Reports have linked Sreelekha’s resignation to dissatisfaction over not receiving the mayor’s post. Sreelekha, however, cited personal reasons in her resignation letter. Sreelekha joined the BJP in October 2024. Earlier reports had also linked her to disagreements over the mayoral decision, though she had rejected an interpretation that her conduct during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s January 2 visit reflected such dissatisfaction.
