NEW DELHI: Passengers booking train tickets through IRCTC can opt for travel insurance for a small additional premium, with benefits of up to Rs 10 lakh in the event of accidental death or permanent total disability during the insured journey. The scheme is accident-specific and applies to a particular train journey. It is not a regular health insurance or life insurance policy. Under IRCTC’s published insurance terms, accidental death and permanent total disability are covered for Rs 10 lakh.

Permanent partial disability is covered for up to Rs 7.5 lakh. Hospitalisation expenses arising from covered injuries are insured for up to Rs 2 lakh, while Rs 10,000 is available towards transportation of mortal remains.

The protection is not limited to major incidents such as derailments.

> IRCTC’s terms state that eligible coverage extends from the actual departure of the train from the originating station until its arrival at the destination, including the process of boarding and getting off the train. Accidental falls from passenger trains are also included within the defined “untoward incidents.”

However, the policy does not function as general medical cover. Passengers cannot use it simply because they develop a fever or another illness during a journey. The policy also contains exclusions and conditions governing when compensation can be claimed.

Missing a train is not covered. Accidents while crossing railway tracks are also excluded under the published terms.

If an eligible accident occurs, the insurance claim is handled between the insured passenger and the insurance company rather than IRCTC. Passengers should preserve the necessary accident and medical records required for the claim process. Passengers opting for the scheme should also ensure that their nominee details are properly submitted after booking.

For travellers who already hold personal accident insurance, the railway policy is not a replacement for their existing cover. It provides additional protection specifically linked to eligible accidents and incidents during the insured train journey.
