KOZHIKODE: A public health inspector of Tirurangadi Municipality was arrested by Vigilance officials in an alleged Rs 10,000 bribery case after the money was flushed down a toilet during a raid, according to the Vigilance account. Officials later recovered the cash from the toilet pipe.

The arrested official was identified as Sreeji, a Thiruvananthapuram native working as a public health inspector with Tirurangadi Municipality. The incident occurred the previous day.The case followed a complaint from a woman entrepreneur living abroad who had approached the municipality for a licence to start a hotel and juice shop.According to the complaint, she contacted the municipality several times, but Sreeji allegedly rejected the application without giving a valid reason. Suspicious about the repeated rejection, the woman contacted the official directly.

She alleged that Sreeji told her the licence could be issued quickly if she paid Rs 10,000. The woman then informed Vigilance officials about the alleged demand.According to Vigilance, Sreeji asked the woman to bring the money to the house where he was staying on rent. With the assistance of Vigilance officials, she went to the residence and handed over the money.

After she left the room, Vigilance officers knocked on the door. Officials said Sreeji initially refused to open it.

Vigilance alleged that the official then put the money into the toilet and flushed it in an attempt to dispose of the evidence. He initially denied accepting any money, according to officials.During questioning, however, he allegedly disclosed that the cash had been flushed down the toilet.

Vigilance officials then removed the toilet using a high-pressure pump and recovered the Rs 10,000 from the pipe, according to the agency. The accused was subsequently produced before a Vigilance court and remanded to judicial custody.
