KOLKATA: Five-time world champions Brazil defeated India 4-0 in an international friendly at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday, with substitute Samuel Lino scoring twice in the second half. Estevao and Pedro scored the other goals for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

India kept Brazil from scoring for the opening 27 minutes despite Vinicius Junior repeatedly pushing into the Indian penalty area. Anirudh Thapa and Apuia also helped India attempt a few early attacking moves.

Brazil broke through in the 28th minute. Estevao advanced from the right and beat India captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to open the scoring. Pedro doubled Brazil’s advantage in the 42nd minute, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead before halftime.

Ancelotti made several changes after the break, bringing on players including Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Magalhaes, Vanderson, Samuel Lino and Douglas Luiz. India also replaced Gurpreet in goal with Prabhsukhan Gill.

Lino made an immediate impact. He took advantage of space in the Indian defence in the 58th minute to score Brazil’s third goal. India continued searching for a response. Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams were involved in counterattacks as the hosts tried to find a way back into the match. One of India’s best opportunities came through Williams, but Brazil kept their clean sheet after a goal-line clearance.

Brazil remained in control as the match entered stoppage time. Lino struck again in the 90+5th minute, completing his brace and sealing a 4-0 victory for Brazil. The two goals were Lino’s first for the Brazilian national team. The Kolkata match marked the first meeting between the senior national teams of India and Brazil.
