THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala’s Home Department has sought files related to a preliminary Vigilance inquiry conducted nearly 20 years ago involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The 2006 inquiry was linked to the death by suicide of a Malaysian national

.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has directed that the case be reinvestigated. The move followed a complaint submitted by KPCC executive committee member Malayinkeezhu Venugopal seeking a fresh investigation.

Gyanesh Kumar was serving as Kerala’s Public Works Department secretary when the Malaysian national died by suicide. The state government’s move comes amid nationwide protests against Gyanesh Kumar over issues related to the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of electoral rolls.

Lee See Been, chief project manager of PATI-BEL, the company that had undertaken the MC Road development project, died by suicide in Malaysia in 2006. According to reports about Lee’s suicide note, he had referred to severe pressure allegedly faced from government officials in connection with clearing payments for the project.

Gyanesh Kumar, who was then the department secretary, was also reportedly mentioned in the note.

The then LDF government announced a Vigilance inquiry into alleged irregularities connected with the project. Vigilance conducted a preliminary inquiry, but no further action followed, according to the information in the complaint seeking a fresh investigation.

The old case has returned to attention after former Kerala finance minister Dr. Thomas Isaac recently alleged that Gyanesh Kumar had a role in circumstances surrounding Lee’s death. The allegation remains Isaac’s position and has not been presented as an established finding against the Chief Election Commissioner. The Home Department is now seeking records connected with the earlier Vigilance inquiry as the government moves to examine the case again.
